Sporting KC v San Jose Earthquakes

You may not expect this, but i love soccer.  I grew up playing in various youth leagues in the suburbs of Washington DC. Soccer was strongest sport for many years but unfortunately my public middle school did not offer sports programs. My pursuit of competitive soccer ended in the 7th grade. I later turned to lacrosse and cross-country running and was moderately successful in both. I didn’t considered competitive soccer at the high school level.

Fast forward about 10 years from 1996 to 2006….I moved to Kansas City during the 2006 World Cup and quickly made some soccer-loving friends. After watching many matches of the ’06 world cup, we all started playing recreationally and began following our local pro team Sporting KC (formerly the Kansas City Wizards).

This past fall I was given access to photograph the final two Sporting KC home games of the 2010 season.  I had never been more nervous and excited for a photo assignment until this opportunity came along. Showing up at the stadium and entering through the media check-in was like a dream. Stepping onto the nationally award-winning perfectly manicured field was like a scene from a movie. I’ve been professionally photographing weddings, people, and places for about 6 years, but what you see below is my first attempt at photographing fast-action sports. It proved to be of the most thrilling assignments thus far!
